- Remove their access to your electric system. The vast majority of pet species will be drawn to electrical wires–after all, they’re everywhere, they dangle, and they are chewy. They provide an outlet for anxiety or just excess energy. The best way to ensure your pet doesn’t get into the electrical wires is not to have them accessible in the first place. As much as possible, tuck cords in out-of-the-way places behind nearby furniture like a nightstand, desk, or bookcase. It would be best never to cover cords with heavy objects because this could cause them to overheat or get damaged. If a cord needs to be out in the open, use clips or tape to keep it out of reach.
- Make the wires less enticing. Wires are a fun texture to chomp; however, if they were to taste gross, your pets would be less tempted to put them in their mouths. Luckily, many deterrent sprays taste bitter to discourage chewing. You can safely apply these sprays to covered wires, but never spray anything directly exposed to electricity, such as a socket, surge protector, or uncovered wire.
- Provide another outlet for their chewing. Many animals, particularly dogs, release excess energy by chewing on objects. If they are bored, understimulated, or need to play but don’t have anyone to join them, they’ll resort to grabbing whatever they can find. It’s a common behavior you see when a puppy is left home alone. To avoid this dangerous search for fun, make sure your pet is properly exercised. Take your dog on walks, throw a ball for them in the backyard, play tug with them before you head out. Please do your research to understand the specific energy requirements for your breed of cat or dog, and do your best to meet them each day. If they appear to be interested in wires, redirect their attention to an enticing toy. Be sure not to use food to lure them away, though, as they will likely come to see this as a reward for chewing on the wires.
- Avoid keeping multiple wires close together. The danger with wires doesn’t just stem from electricity. If they were to get tangled, they could get scared and hurt themselves even further when they try to get free. Spread them out as much as possible, and secure them when you can with clips or tape.
- Be cautious with fire hazards. Fairy lights, wax warmers, and Christmas trees can all be knocked over and start a fire if left plugged in while you’re gone.
