There are many different kinds of electrical switches that are used in a home. Some are noticeably different, while others may seem identical when the switch covers are installed but in reality function quite differently. Keep in mind that the type of switch is different from the style of switch – whether it is a toggle, slider, or rocker if they are the same type they will function the same. Most switches are used for lights, but some homes also have switches to control garbage disposals, fireplaces, or to turn the power on and off from outlets in a room. Understanding what type of switch controls your fixtures may help when there are issues or updates needed.
Single-Pole Switch: This is the most basic switch used in a home. It generally has labels for the on/off positions, unless it is a rocker-type switch that does not include them. The single-pole switch is used as the sole switch for whatever fixture to which it is wired.
Three-Way Switch: This type of switch looks almost identical to the single-pole switch on the outside, in most cases. However, where the single-pole is the only control method for a fixture, a fixture with three-way switches can be turned on and off by two. You see these often installed in a long hallway or staircase so that you can turn the light on at one end and then can turn it off via another switch at the other end. Occasionally, living room ceiling lights or fans may also be wired using three-way switches.
Double-Pole Switch: Double-pole switches have two sets of wires connected to them, meaning they can control two circuits at once. If your double-pole switch has one toggle, it will turn both circuits on and off at the same time. If the switch has two toggles, the circuits can be operated separately. In the home, these kinds of switches are usually used for light and fan combinations. More often, you see these switches in more industrial buildings–especially since they can handle a higher amperage than a normal single-pole switch.
Four-Way Switch: In cases where a room is quite large, a four-way switch may be present. This switch is used when you want more than two separate switches to control the same outlet. For example, you may want four switches for your living room light–one next to the front door, one next to the hall entrance, one by the stairs, and one by the back door. Four-way switches are used in conjunction with three-way electrical switches to allow for any switch to control the light.
Smart Switch: Smart switches are becoming more and more popular these days as families hook up their homes to devices like Alexa, Echo, or Google Home. You can find smart switches of any type, be it single-pole or four-way; just make sure that the brand you buy is compatible with your specific smart hub, as some may not work with all of them. These smart switches allow you to control the lights with your voice so that you can turn them on while your hands are full or turn them off after you’ve already crawled into bed.
